Jewel-Osco Employee Spotlight: Meet the International Foods Aisle Curator

In a city as diverse as Chicago, the demand for authentic international foods is constantly growing. Behind the scenes, dedicated individuals work to ensure that grocery store shelves reflect the rich tapestry of cultures that call our city home. We sat down with Maria Rodriguez, the International Foods Aisle Curator at a prominent Jewel-Osco location, to get a glimpse into her role and gather some insider tips for shoppers.

Meet Maria Rodriguez

Q: Maria, thank you for joining us. Can you tell us a little bit about your role as the International Foods Aisle Curator at Jewel-Osco?

A: It’s a role I truly love! My main responsibility is to ensure our international foods aisle is well-stocked with a diverse range of products that cater to the many different communities we serve. It’s about more than just filling shelves; it’s about understanding culinary traditions and making sure our customers can find the ingredients they need to cook their favorite dishes from around the world.

Product Selection & Trends

Q: How do you decide which international products to stock? Do you get feedback from the community?

A: Absolutely! Community feedback is crucial. We pay close attention to customer requests, local demographics, and what’s trending in ethnic restaurants. For example, if we see a new wave of customers from a particular region, we’ll research their culinary needs. We also work closely with our suppliers who specialize in international imports. It’s a constant learning process.

Q: Are there any new or emerging international food trends that you’re seeing?

A: Definitely! We’ve seen a huge surge in demand for plant-based alternatives in ethnic cuisines, like vegan versions of traditional curries or plant-based meat substitutes for Asian dishes. Also, there’s a growing interest in less common regional cuisines, beyond the typical Chinese, Mexican, or Italian. People are more adventurous now, which is exciting for us.

Holiday Planning & Insider Tips

Q: How do you prepare the international aisle for cultural holidays like Diwali, Lunar New Year, or Ramadan?

A: Holiday planning starts months in advance! We anticipate demand for specific ingredients. For Diwali, we stock up on ghee, specialty flours, and nuts. For Lunar New Year, it’s specific noodles, sauces, and sometimes even fresh whole fish. During Ramadan, dates, lentils, and certain spices become very popular. We try to create special displays to make it easy for customers to find what they need for their celebrations.

Q: What are your top tips for shoppers looking to explore the international aisle and find the best deals?

A: My first tip is to don’t be afraid to ask! If you’re looking for something specific or want to know how to use an ingredient, ask a store associate. We’re here to help. Second, check the weekly ad and the “for U” app for deals on international items. They often have great promotions. Third, look for new arrivals. We’re always trying to bring in new and exciting products, so keep an eye out. Finally, buy in bulk for staples like rice, lentils, or certain spices if you use them frequently. It’s more economical in the long run.

Personal Connection

Q: Do you have a personal connection to any of the international foods you curate?

A: As a Latina, I grew up with the flavors of Mexico and Central America, so I have a special connection to those sections. But I’ve learned so much about other cultures through this job. It’s truly a privilege to help people connect with their heritage, or explore new cultures, through food.

Thank you, Maria, for sharing your insights! Next time you’re at Jewel-Osco, take a moment to explore the international aisle. You might just discover your new favorite ingredient or dish.
